Cleaning Day Dolls

Began a hazy, warm morning with breakfast and two episodes of Tiny Toon Adventures from the late first season. I specifically began with "The Return of the Acme Acres Zone" because the first short in that episode is a spoof of Blade Runner, "Real Kids Don't Eat Broccoli." (Figured it was appropriate, with the sequel in theaters getting such great reviews.) Buster searches for Babs' missing droid, but there's a lot more going on in this futuristic world than meets the eye. "Boo Ha Ha" has Plucky and Hampton dodging a ghost in a haunted hotel that's determined to spook them. We end with more sci-fi as Plucky imagines he's "Duck Dodgers Jr.", helping his hero Daffy stop Marvin the Martian and his protege Marsha from turning the universe into tiny cubes.

Continued with the Toons as I did a quick vacuuming session. Babs and Buster dive into classic literature and strange daydreams in "Weirdest Stories Ever Told." Buster is "Robin Hare" who must rescue the fair Maid Babs from Sheriff Monty...but who's going to rescue him when he falls into Monty's trap? "To Babs or Not to Babs" has the pink girl rabbit driving Shakespeare himself crazy when she auditions for his latest show. Reading travel books in the library has Buster wishing he could see exotic ports of call...but he seriously rethinks this when he has a nightmare about "Elmyras 'Round the World" chasing him to every country on Earth!

Headed out to do a short grocery trip around 12:30. I was really there to restock a few things. Grabbed whole wheat flour, yogurt, peanut butter, soup (Progresso was on sale - decided on Chicken Lemon with Orzo), canned pumpkin, blue corn chips, ground turkey, coconut for something I wanted to make later, and a strawberry sparkling water for the way home. Those tasty oat sandwich bars were on sale and there was an online coupon for them. The Acme had them with coconut butter. I couldn't resist. Found a half-gallon of fresh, local apple cider on sale, too.

Since I was there, I got my schedule. Much better than last week's. While I only have two days off this time and I'll miss the Eagles game on Sunday, I have slightly more hours, and they're all in the afternoon/early evening. That'll give me plenty of time to finish the cleaning and my current story.

As soon as I got home, I put everything away, then had lunch. Ran the first Justice League two-part episode on the set I rented. The first season of the early 2000's version of DC's major superhero group concentrated on complicated two-part action tales, like "The Brave and the Bold." Green Lantern and The Flash find themselves working with a gorilla from a hidden city of apes in Africa to take down Gorilla Grodd, a mad genius who uses a mind control device to put all the city under his power.

Went outside to do some cleaning after the episode ended. I usually try to wash the trash can and recycling canisters twice a year, in mid-May when it starts getting warmer and in mid-October, right before it cools off. Thanks to the unusually warm and slightly humid weather, today was the perfect time to do it. The hose was detached and the water shut off when I came down to the backyard. Charlie must have shut it off for the season before he left. I ended up lugging a bucket of water outside to scrub them instead.

Next on the to-do list was changing the American Girls into outfits appropriate for early fall and Indian Summer. Josefina and Samantha wear their current meet outfits. Felicity wears her original Rose Garden meet dress. Put Molly in Kit's original "meet" outfit with the lavender sweater set and floral pleated skirt and her own white t-strap shoes. Whitney's sporting (Rebecca's) School Outfit with Springfield Collection socks and the black strap shoes from Samantha's current meet outfit. (I put Sam in black and white button-up boots.) Jessa's in her original "meet" high-necked t-shirt, light jeans, yellow socks, and turquoise and white sneakers.

Did some writing after I finished the dolls. Leia is enjoying her crab dinner with the Wicket family when a couple of neighborhood kids come over to ask Davy and his siblings out to play. The local kids have caught four spies! To Leia's annoyance, the "spies" are Hank, Luke, Charlie, and Arturro, who came looking for her and were tied to trees by the kids. Chip, who is good with children, was spared. Luke doesn't need magic to get them to let him go, just the promise that they can help them catch the real bad guys on the boardwalk in a few days.

Finally broke around 6:30. Swept the porch (which needed it badly) before having dinner. Had leftovers and made a Coconut Cake while finishing the second Justice League two-parter. It's "Injustice for All" when Lex Luthor finally ends up in prison, then discovers that his constant exposure to kryptonite has given him a terminal illness. He ignores it and breaks out of prison anyway with the help of brilliant, cultured Ultra-Humanite. He rounds up a team of some of the most famous super villains in the DCU to help him destroy Superman, but isn't happy when the Joker shows up and tries going after Batman instead.

Finished the night with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein after a shower. This was the first in a series of films that had Universal's most famous comic duo of the 1940's and 50's encountering their most popular horror icons. Chick (Bud Abbott) and Wilbur (Lou Costello) are baggage clerks who are handling the trunks for a local wax museum. Chick doesn't believe it, but the trunks contain the remains of Frankenstein's monster (Glenn Strange) and Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi). A mad scientist (Lenore Aubert) wants to use Wilbur's brain for the monster and attempts to seduce him. A pretty insurance agent (Jane Randolph) gets them out of prison after they're accused of stealing the monsters. Now they have to figure out how how to dodge those monsters and the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr) and get out of this mess with what brains they have fully intact.

One of the duo's best films has fun with the Universal monster roster while making full use of the duo's hilarious exchanges and routines. I also love that this is probably the only movie I've ever seen where both the mad scientist and the valiant undercover cop are female. If you're a fan of the duo or want some laughs with your scares, this is one of their best films and is highly recommended by me.
