Straight from the Hart

Began the morning with breakfast and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. "Teela's Quest" takes her to the Crystal Mountains in order to speak with an oracle who may know what happened to her real mother. He-Man follows her, and discovers he has good reason to be worried when Mer-Man attempts to use her as a sacrifice for an infamous sea creature. 

Called Uber around quarter of 11, soon as the show ended. Thankfully after the last few days, we had no trouble here whatsoever. The first driver, to my surprise, arrived in 4 minutes. The one going home came in 5. There was no difficulty on the road, no traffic anywhere.

We got off at the Gloucester Premium Outlets. Unlike the outlet mall in Atlantic City, which is spread out across busy streets, the one in Blackwood is entirely food traffic. It's more like the Washington Street Mall in Cape May. Hit pay dirt at our very first stop of the day. Go! Calendars and Toys had selected Beanie Babies and Squishmallows on deep discount. Lauren got a cute turquoise and pink mouse clip to hang on her backpack. I found a darling little ball-like hedgehog Beanie Baby named Hazel for $3 and a smaller orange and yellow striped Squishmallow fish named Lucienne for $5. After that, we both peeked at Famous Footwear and It's All Leggings, but didn't find anything.

Since Friendly's is around the corner from It's All Leggings and it was noon by that point, we had lunch. Friendly's was surprisingly not that busy. It was mainly families and older couples just coming in for lunch. Usually, Friendly's is packed at lunchtime. They're the only sit-down restaurant at the mall. Lauren had a burger, fries, and a Diet Coke. I had a tasty grilled chicken wrap, fries, and a Coconut Cream Soda - basically, a soda with coconut syrup and topped with cream. That was really good. Really tasted like coconut. You can't leave Friendly's without getting ice cream. Lauren had her favorite, black raspberry with peanut butter sauce. I had fluffernutter with Swiss chocolate sauce. They wound up being a perfect combination.

We were in and out of stores for the next two hours. Neither of us found anything at Express, Old Navy, the Gap, or Under Armour. I hit the jackpot at Lane Bryant. They were having a buy 3 items, get them 60 percent off sale. Picked up a pair of drawstring jean shorts and two shirts, one Peanuts, one Care Bears, two soft bras (their underwire bras all have padding, which I don't need), and five pairs of underwear. I got more underwear at Jockey. Lauren got underwear and leggings there.

After we finished at Jockey, we figured we'd done enough shopping. It was time to make our way across the street to Dave & Buster's. This huge arcade is basically the same idea as Round 1, with a sports bar instead of a bowling alley. I spent the next hour running from Centipede to giant Space Invaders to Lane Bowling to ring toss to Monopoly to Pac Man-themed skee ball. Got a sweet vintage red Corvette on Cruisin' Blast and came in second on the Death Valley course. Came in first with Princess Peach on the Princess Castle course in Mario Kart by a wide margin. Good wins on the pirate-themed wheel and the "gone fishing" spinning wheel brought me to over 6,500 points. I got a magnetic chess/checkers/backgammon board game and a fruit-scented stuffed Panda named Purdy.

When we got back in Oaklyn, we put everything away, then went right back out. Lauren loves Mexican food, so we had dinner at Jalapeno's. They were a little busier than usual, especially with South and Latin Americans watching the World Cup game between Columbia and Switzerland. I had my favorite shrimp quesadilla. Lauren had the fish tacos I tried two weeks ago, grilled plantains with raspberry sauce (she loves anything with raspberry), and a mojito in a small, thin glass. For once, I was too full for dessert! (Oh, and to the disappointment of the bar patrons, Switzerland won, 4-3. The Swiss apparently went absolutely bonkers over it. According to Fox, this is the first time they've been to the World Cup quarterfinals since 1954.) 

The other reason we ate at Jalapeno's is it's a block from WaWa. I just got money there, but Lauren bought a Wild Cherry Pepsi Zero and several bags of mixed nuts. We wanted to play with the kitties at the Calico Cat Cafe, but they wouldn't be available for an hour. I just got another dirty soda instead. (Oh, and the regular creamer did work better with the Dr. Pepper Zero. I had sprinkles in there this time, too.) 

At least the weather was decent for all the running around we did. It remains humid, but it's also cool, cloudy, and breezy. It was probably in the upper 70's, a little bit warmer than yesterday, but nowhere close to the 100 degree heat from last week!

I went straight into Match Game '75 when I got home while Lauren watched wrestling. I came in just in time for one of the episodes from the infamous week with Joan Collins. I don't think Collins was really all that happy about being there. Scoey Mitchelll would be happier if he could match the contestant a little more often.

Finished the night with Hart to Hart. It's a "Love Game" when Jonathan and Jennifer learn a tennis pro has been romancing wives of businessmen and funneling that information to a duplicitous stockbroker. When they learn he plans on doing the same to Jennifer, she gives him false information. Johnathan has to stall his game with real-life tennis pro Martina Navratilova until the stockbroker finds out that the information they planted is phony...but the stockbroker doesn't take it well and goes after Johnathan. 

Walk In the Rain

Began a gloomy, rainy morning with breakfast and the Shirt Tales. "Digger's Three Wishes" has him dreaming that his new lamp can produce a genie who grants him all the wealth he wants. He, Tyg, and Bogey are delighted, but Pammy and Kip think there's something up with these sudden riches. Turns out they're right when the genie swipes the money and the girls. Digger has even more trouble when he goes out of town and "Digger's Double," a rat who has been stealing cheese, impersonates him. The others figure it out when the rat is a little to eager to go out on assignment with Tyg and Bogey.

Switched to the Bowery Boys while working on yesterday's blog entry. Slip (Leo Gorcey) is In Fast Company when Father Donovan (Charles D. Brown) guilt trips him into helping an independent cab company after its owner is run off the road by Steve Trent (Douglas Fowley) of Red Circle Cab. Slip would mind helping less if it didn't mean he constantly has to break dates with his girl Mabel (Judy Clark) or explain what's going on to her uncle Louie (Bernard Gorcey) who owns the ice cream shop where they all congregate. When his friend Chuck (David Gorcey) is hurt by Trent and his goons while on duty, Slip and the others take it on themselves to tell the company's owner Mr. McCormick (Paul Harvey) what's going on.

By quarter of 2, I was bored and tired of sitting inside, and the showers were slowing down. They weren't slow enough for me to walk around in Cherry Hill like I originally planned, but I could run a few errands in Oaklyn. I grabbed my umbrella and headed out for a walk...then went right back inside and got my raincoat when I realized how cold it was! It wasn't even in the 70's. I think it might have been mid-60's. No wonder it felt so nice in my rooms.

My first stop was Family Dollar. I think they might be in the middle of remodeling. The baby items were all in bins instead of shelves. Good. That place is a mess. It could stand with a redo. I picked up trash bags and more of the cheap Pure Kick hydrate mix packs (in Arctic Wave this time), then moved on.

Since it's the closest restaurant that was actually open on a Tuesday, I went to Jalapeno's Mexican Bar and Grill for lunch. Needless to say, they were dead quiet at 2:30. The only other people there were two women chatting in a booth. I had delicious, full, and messy fish tacos and watched the Poland Vs. Uzbekistan World Cup soccer game on their TV in peace. (Later research revealed that Poland won, 5-0.)

I wanted to treat myself to WaWa in honor of the end of the school year yesterday, but I took Uber to and from the school and didn't want to run into storms afterwards. I ended up with a soft pretzel and a tasty Raspberry Chip Smoothie made with real raspberry puree. Watched cats play with volunteers at the Calico Cat Cafe a block down as I passed by them.

Took out the trash and brought it down to the curb when I got home, then went straight into bed for a nap. I was so tired. I stayed up too early Sunday night and couldn't sleep the next morning, and then there was all the craziness at Thomas Sharp. I went down at quarter of 4, got up at 6, and was still tired.

Put on Buzzr after I got up...only to find something called Buzzr's Top 10 instead of Match Game. This seems to be a special featuring big moments from the shows Freemantle owns that has shown up randomly all month. Incidentally, #2 is the introduction of Plinko on The Price Is Right. The top great moment is so infamous, a movie was released about it last year, Michael Larson amassing over $100,000 on Press Your Luck.

Watched Match Game '75 while I ate dinner after that finally started. Bert Convy, Mary Ann Mobley, and Betty White returned for the last episodes taped in 1974. Bert was amused by a question that asked what he did with the ladies, while everyone teased Brett over another question that joked about her wigs.

(Oh, and Buzzr has two big announcements for next month. First of all, their next marathon will be "Buzzr Goes Global," featuring two Freemantle shows from England and Family Feud Canada. Their other new show, Family Feud Moments, is less welcome. This just looks like it's "best segments from the current Steve Harvey Feud." It's probably in honor of Feud's 50th anniversary this year, but while I have no problems with Steve Harvey or his show, it doesn't really fit on Buzzr.) 

Moved to YouTube after Match Game ended. Did two Hungarian Folk Tales first. "The Giant Beanstalk" is "Jack and the Beanstalk" with the Giant playing a hurdy-gurdy instead of a singing harp. The mother also doesn't throw the beans out the window. Jack just plants them. "The Princess Three Pigs and Three Birthmarks" gets a little ribald when a young pig herder who can make his porcine charges dance agrees to let the Princess have them, if she'll lift her skirt for him. Turns out he has his reasons for this when the king announces that the man who marries her daughter will be the one who knows where her birthmarks are.

Finished the night with more of The Swamp Fox. Marion and his men have been wrecking havoc on the road, including capturing Mary Videux's father and sending him to prison. Colonel Horry's "Redcoat Strategy" is to have two of his men infiltrate Marion's group and learn the location of his hideout. Marion, as usual, is two steps ahead of them, including rescuing Mary, her maid Delia (Louise Beavers), and his friend Oscar (Smoki Whitfield). 

Little Birthday Boy

It was still sunny and beautiful when I got up this morning. I made Banana Pancakes while catching up with some of my newer CD's. Say You Will, one of Fleetwood Mac's newer albums, debuted a year after I moved to Wildwood. Though the title song was the big hit, my favorite song from this one is the driving "Peacemaker." I did Bruno Mars' Doo Wop & Hooligans as I did some more writing and packed up for work.

Work was busy for most of the afternoon. Nice weather early on coupled with this being the only day many people can shop at all brought a lot of folks out of the woodwork. I just out of place. Everyone complained about having to shop at all and this and that and the other thing. I enjoy shopping, including grocery shopping. All I could think is how out-of-place I felt. My customers and co-workers have nothing in common with me, and I have nothing in common with them. Thankfully, it slowed down enough by 5 PM that I was able to shut down with no relief. I quickly bought a bag for Khai's birthday present before heading out.

As soon as I got home, I changed, packed up Khai's birthday present, signed his birthday card and Rose's, and rode to their house on Kendall. My nephew Khai's birthday is today. He's an adorable five. Rose and Craig took him to the Philadelphia Zoo earlier today for his big birthday present. He'd long had his cake by the time I finally got there, but he was still awake. I had some of the cute zoo-themed cake Rose made and was able to give Khai his chalk and Rose her birthday card (her birthday was two weeks ago). They gave me a birthday card too with 20 dollars in it. I watched the Philadelphia Union soccer team play the New England Revolution on ESPN as Craig helped Khai put his new Lego car track together.

(Incidentally, the Revolution eventually won, 2 to 1.)

I headed home to have leftover tuna casserole for dinner. Ran The Pirates of Penzance as I ate. This is the Broadway cast of the hit early 80's revival that includes Linda Rondstat as Mabel and Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. I've been a fan of the film for years. The original cast is also worth having - it's more-or-less the same, with the exception of Estelle Parsons as Ruth.

The weather that was so nice in the morning had clouded up and become cold by the time I got out of work. It's remained so the rest of the evening, including while I was at Rose's. It's supposed to rain hard tomorrow. We'll see how things go.
