Harvests and Southern Belles

Got a quick start this morning with breakfast and Charlie & Lola. "I am Inventing a Usefulish Invention" claims Lola when Charlie and his best friend Marv show her a book on how to create them. They can't think of an invention for a school project, but Lola literally gets stuck on an idea that might help them out.

Hurried off to the Collingswood Farm Market soon as the episode ended. At that point, it was still a hot, sunny, and killer humid day. The market was teeming with people who wanted produce for their barbecues, birthday parties, and church picnics. Cherries, plums, and peas are gone, but not only is there plenty of everything else around, but the first winter squash just debuted. I came up with blueberries, cherry tomatoes, white peaches, yellow apples, cinnamon raisin swirl bread from the Wild Flour Bakery booth, and more blackberries.

Stopped at the A&A Pretzel Shop around the corner from me on the way home. Wanted one of their cheesesteak-stuffed pretzels. Bought two regular ones for treats later, too.

Went home and put everything away, then had lunch while watching People: A Musical Celebration. I go further into this sweet TV special about a grandfather who uses his multicultural New York neighborhood to teach his granddaughter a lesson in diversity at my Musical Dreams Movie Reviews blog.

Headed out to work shortly after the movie ended. Work was off-and-on dead. The lines wouldn't have been as long if I wasn't the only one on a register for two hours. Even after another cashier came on, we had long lines. One man had trouble with his health company card and held up a long line. Others got me flustered asking about sales that should have gone through but didn't (or they didn't think it did). And I discovered that they want me to come in early tomorrow to take an online company course of some kind that apparently lasts for an hour. They couldn't put this on the schedule somewhere?

Even as I rode to work, thick gray clouds gathered in the background. It spit a little when I was crossing Nicholson, but it didn't really start raining hard until nearly 1:30. And this time, we did get a thunderstorm, complete with noise and pounding precipitation. Thankfully, the rain had long ended by the time I finally got out at 7 (and it hasn't done anything but be humid since then).

Ate a quick dinner and jumped in the shower the moment I got home. Finished the night on YouTube with this week's Match Game Saturday Classics marathon. Actress and author Fannie Flagg was in the spotlight this week. Flagg began on the show in late 1973 and continued through several weeks of The Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour in 1983 and '84. She remains one of the show's favorite and most beloved ladies who occupied the sixth "comedienne" seat.

Fannie seemed to have a particular fondness for showing up in costume. Once in 1975, she claimed she was the elusive and long-retired actress Greta Garbo in a floppy hat, dark glasses, and bob wig. (Incidentally, Garbo retired in 1941, not 1935 like Richard Dawson claimed.) Another time in '75, she turned up in a long wavy wig and a Brooklyn accent that made her look and sound like Maple LaMarsh from Remember WENN. There was also the time she appeared in a Girl Scout uniform, and when she wore the nurse's uniform she sported in the first Grease film. (She's the one who complains on the first day of school that her caster oil is already missing.)

There were also Fannie's famous t-shirts. They either had a sequined character, or applique patches in suggestive places. The latter is represented by her fried egg shirt and one depicting roses. The rose shirt episode also featured her dancing with handsome contestant Ron Valenti, whom she flirted constantly with and supposedly had a crush on.

She and Brett were late for her very last taping on the last syndicated episode she appeared on, prompting Gene to throw a fit at them for upstaging the star. Later on, Fannie tries to help a contestant with "__ Rebellion" in the Head-to-Head, but Brett doesn't believe her answer. In an earlier episode, Gene announces that Fannie is writing her first book (which would eventually turn into Coming Attractions, now known as Daisy Faye and the Miracle Man).

Join this southern-fried favorite for some whimsical hilarity in this wild marathon!
