We headed out around 11 to have lunch. Lauren requested Jalapeno's Bar and Grill a few blocks down the White Horse Pike. They were so empty when we arrived, I think we were the first ones there. We ate the whole basket of house-made chips and salsa, finishing it just as the waiter brought our food. Lauren had a chipotle chicken quesadilla. I had a shrimp quesadilla. Yum. Just as good as the shrimp burrito I had there a while back, with lots of small shrimp and tons of cheese. Lauren said hers was just as good, and just spicy enough.
Since it was close to noon by the time we got out, I decided it would be best to move things along. We took the bus up the White Horse Pike to Barrington. The bus was slightly late, nothing outrageous, and not at all full. We got off at the shelter at the entrance to Barrington in less than ten minutes.
It took us even less time to walk the two blocks down Crescent Lake Road to the Barrington Antique Center. This huge warren of tiny rooms is filled with every vaguely collectible item you can ever imagine, from genuine centuries-old glassware and books to DVD and Barbies from a few years ago. We both poked around the groaning shelves for an hour...and we both came up with a good pile. I found a record, a CD, a copy of Felicity's Story Collection, and a really cool plastic Eagles mug from 2002 representing their NFC East championship that year and the final season for Veteran's Stadium. Lauren picked up a purple dress, a pretty silver ring with purple stones, a tie for a guy friend of hers, a mint-condition purple towel set, and a patch from Opryland (which she and her parents visited in the 80's).
We crossed Crescent Lake Road and headed down Atlantic to the industrial park just outside of town. The House of Fun is next-door to the park in its own building. It's the same jumble of horror and sci-fi DVDs and Blu-Rays, anime memorabilia, action figures, stuffed toys, vintage video games, and Funko Pops as ever. Came up with something here, too. I found two American-themed Beanie Baby bears, star-spangled Glory and flag-printed Spangle, to use as patriotic decorations. Lauren picked up an adorable penguin wearing a red scarf and a Coca Cola-print snow hat.
I thought Lauren would like Past and Present Vintage, a clothes store specializing in vintage t-shirts and sports jerseys. Though we both looked around, I'm the one who ended up buying something. I found an Eric Lindros Flyers T-shirt from I believe the late 90's in perfect shape. I had a bit of a crush on him when he was a Flyer during my high school and early college years. It was only $20, too, not bad considering what some of the inventory in the rest of the store cost.
Walking down to Haddon Heights may not have been the best idea I ever had. For one thing, though it was cloudy by 2 PM, it was also hot, in the mid-80's, and incredibly muggy. There aren't many sidewalks on Atlantic Avenue in Haddon Heights and Barrington, either. We'd be walking on the street or alongside the guard railings.
I was glad when we emerged right where I wanted to go next, the building that housed Station Avenue Antiques. We didn't do quite as well here, but we did find a few things. Lauren bought another ring and a cute necklace with a Super Mario mushroom pendant. I picked up two more records.
Incidentally, the CD I found was:
Johnny Mathis and Henry Mancini - The Hollywood Musicals (replacing a cassette copy that's in storage)
The records are:
The original soundtracks from the Disney Peter Pan and the Bing Crosby movie High Time
Grimm's Fairy Tales, an RCA Camden release of fairy tale retellings by "The Hanky Pank Players"
Since I enjoyed the Market Links Cafe's food so much the last time I visited them in April, I introduced Lauren to them. Neither of us were hungry, but we desperately needed drinks after our walk. Lauren had the Revolution Cold Brew. I had the PBC - a smoothie made from oats, honey, peanut butter, cocoa, and nut milk. Not bad at all. The oats did make it a tad chewy, but it was cold and just sweet enough, and that's really all I cared about by then.
We originally planned to keep walking down to Audubon, but first of all, those clouds were getting thicker by the minute. The wind had picked up, too. Second, even just the walk between Haddon Heights and Barrington wore us out. It was a lot easier to pick up the bus on the White Horse Pike again and just take that back to Oaklyn.
Spent the rest of the late afternoon and evening watching game show episodes. I couldn't resist showing her the hilarious Password episode that had Carol Burnett wiping the floor with her mentor, boss, and friend Garry Moore. Betsy Palmer beat the pants off Dick Van Dyke in the next episode, too. Olivia De Havilland did slightly better in her episode than a very nervous Anthony Perkins.
Switched to Classic Concentration next. Lauren's a big fan of this one. We came in as a lady in glasses lost her attempt at the match-the-car round. She didn't make it back there. She was beaten by an enthusiastic young man who won a raft of prizes, but had no better luck with the car.
Let it run into Match Game Syndicated as we had dinner. The first episode finished off the week with Anitra Gillette, Bart Braverman, and Jim Staal. Charles didn't have any luck with "__ Fox" in the first Head-to-Head, but he was thrilled when his answer to "You've Gotta Be __" was on the board. Bart was just happy to get a hug from a nice older lady.
Comedian and impressionist Fred Travalena and comedienne Phyllis Diller made their first appearances on the show in the next week. Charles turned up in the first episode unshaven and without makeup. According to him, he'd been late coming from the acting classes he taught. They actually brought a makeup man on-set to do his makeup. The second one featured a nervous contestant who sounded a lot like Joyce Bulifant. David Doyle didn't have much luck with "__ Your Dog" in the Head-to-Head in the third episode.
After that, I finished the night at Tubi with Charlie's Angels. "Angels Belong In Heaven" when an old friend of Charlie's is killed suddenly, right as he tells him one of the ladies is targeted for death. The Angels have to whittle down which one it could be...which becomes a lot easier when Kelly learns that the fiancee of her best friend is more familiar to her than her friend could ever know.
