Ladies and Matches

I began the morning with breakfast and Charming. I go further into this animated fairy tale satire from Netflix at my Musical Dreams Movie Reviews blog.

Finished out The Scooby Doo Show next. Mystery Inc discovers "The Beast Is Awake In a Bottomless Lake" during a fishing trip in Canada. An enormous fish monster has been scaring away the locals. Shaggy and Scooby do their best to evade the creature while the others make their way to the bottom of the lake to investigate.

And that's that. Honestly, if you want to give your older kids a good overview of Scooby Doo and the show's tropes and cliches, I'd start here or with Scooby Doo, Where are You? These basic around-the-world mysteries gives you a good idea of the gang's original personalities before they brought Scrappy Doo in and started playing with the formula. Older kids or those looking for something more up-to-date will want to check in with What's New, Scooby Doo first. I'll be starting in on that series the next time I'm in the mood for Scooby.

Threw on a quick Mickey Mouse short while getting ready for work. "The Little Whirlwind" is one of Mickey's best-known later shorts. Mickey tangles with a miniature tornado while cleaning up Minnie's garden. He chases it when it annoys him, until it brings in its much bigger parent to wreck havoc!

Since I was meeting Jessa later, I called Uber. To my annoyance, it took them 16 minutes to arrive. At least they got there quickly after that. I literally rushed in at the last minute.

That was the worst thing that happened all day. I spent the entire afternoon pushing carts. The head bagger swept and did inside chores until she went in a register at 1:30 and the afternoon bagger took over. It was a nice day for it, too, sunny, if still gale-force windy and a bit chilly. No trouble whatsoever here.

I quickly changed shirts, then met Jessa outside on the curb. I wanted to introduce her to Bob at Abbie Road. He was very busy with local teens and their dads digging up records and CDs to listen to this weekend. Jess didn't realize Bob doesn't take credit cards and didn't buy anything. I ended up with three records:

The soundtrack from Licorice Pizza

The Rolling Stones - Made In the Shade

The Real Pearl Bailey

And five CDs (including a two-disc set):

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz Impressions of New York and Jazz Impressions of Eurasia

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook Vol. 1

Two-disc collection of Billie Holliday songs

The other place I wanted to visit on the Black Horse Pike was Del Bueno's Bakery. By the time we got there, they were an hour from closing and out of their raisin rolls and soft pretzels. We both still got bags of hot rolls literally fresh off the enormous machine in the main room. I also bought chocolate ruggalach and a bottle of Cherry Coke Zero to wet my whistle. (My allergies had been acting up all day, and my throat kept getting dry.)

We had dinner at the Futomaki Japanese Restaurant and Hibachi at Audubon Crossings. It was only about quarter of 6 when we arrived, which is likely why they were so quiet. Jess had a salmon bento box with little dumplings, sushi rolls, and tasty sweet potato tempura slices she was willing to share with me. I had an enormous plate of udon noodles with shrimp and vegetables. Yum! They were tasty, but we both had so much, we ended up taking half of our dinners home.

After Jess dropped me off, I spent the rest of the night celebrating International Women's Day with tonight's Match Game marathon. Some of the most popular ladies in Hollywood and on Broadway in the 70's and early 80's appeared on this show. Most only did a week, like Suzanne Sommers during the height of her initial Three's Company popularity and Minnie Pearl on a rare sabbatical from the Grand Ol' Opry. Others went over so well, they became semi-regulars in their own right. Patty Duke, Ethel Merman, comediennes Patti Deusch and Phyllis Diller, dancers Elaine Joyce and Rita Moreno, detective show star Lee Merriweather,  and former Playboy bunny Dolly Martin all turned up on multiple weeks from 1973 through the early 80's.

Charming ladies from other game shows tried their hand at Match Game too. Arlene Francis of What's My Line wasn't the best at matching, but she was very funny flirting with Gene or tossing out quips. Three Price Is Right models appeared during the show's run. Anitra Ford and Janice Pennington only did a week each in 1976. Feisty little Holly Halstrom, on the other hand, became something of a semi-regular in her own right during the syndicated run, even after the show left CBS. She probably appeared the most of any Price Is Right regular besides her boss Bob Barker.

Celebrate International Women's Day with the most beloved ladies on Match Game!
