Life On Mars

Got a quick start this morning with breakfast and another classic Goofy short. "Olympic Champ" has Goofy trying to demonstrate the importance of the flame to the Olympics and various track and field events...if only the narrator would stop talking long enough for him to finish! At least he ends up a winner anyway, no matter what the results of the games are.

Rushed out the door on my bike, hoping to loosen my stiff, sore right knee. I barely made it to work on time...and that was the worst thing that happened all day. No wonder everyone's hours were cut back. We were dead the entire morning. I spent the morning sweeping, gathering carts, and enjoying the sunny and slightly cooler weather with no trouble whatsoever.

Changed, had lunch, and put on The Busy World of Richard Scarry when I got home. "Mr. Gronkle Comes to Stay" after his mansion sustains fire and water damage. He proves to be a very annoying and demanding guest, telling boring stories to the kids and ordering their parents around...but he does appreciate them taking him in more than they know. "Leo-pardo's Smile" proves to be useful when he can't get his constantly-sneezing portrait subject Mona Lisa to sit down, no matter what he invents to make her stay. Huckle encourages Mr. Root to create a "Blooming Busytown" contest to improve everyone's gardens. Everyone is too busy focusing on the prize than their gardens...except for Mr. Frumble, who just wishes he could find his garden!

I laid down for a rest while watching the first half of Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars. This is the second of three Flash Gordon serials made by Universal from 1936 through 1940, and by far the longest and most action-packed. Dr. Zarkov (Frank Shannon), Flash (Buster Crabbe), and Dale Arden (Jean Rogers) first head to Mongo to figure out where a ray that is disintegrating the Earth originates from. After they discover it's really coming from Mars, they head to the Red Planet. Also along for the ride is persistent reporter Happy Hapsgood (Donald Kerr), who definitely did not expect to end up in outer space when he went looking for a story!

Turns out Ming the Merciless (Ray Middleton) is at it again, this time with the help of Azura (Beatrice Roberts), the Queen of Mars. Azura's just as much of a nasty villain as him, if not worse. She's turned most of Mars into clay. They hate her, but have no idea how to stop her powers. They're not the only people living there, either. There's also the more primitive Forest People to deal with, along with various monsters.

Watched the first eight episodes on Disc 4, then moved on to Match Game Syndicated. I'd eat dinner and make the bed a little later during the episodes. We finish the week with Stephanie Edwards and Robert Pine celebrating Charles' birthday with a lovely little brown and yellow cake. Charles was on Broadway starting the next week. Dick Martin traded quips next to Brett in his place. He was joined by Debralee Scott, Bill Daily, Betty White, and Mary Ann Mobley's host hubby Gary Collins.

Finished the night with The Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Amanda is told "Don't Look a Gift Horse In the Mouth" when she has to pose as a bodyguard for the American wife of a visiting Middle Eastern prince. She doesn't mind befriending the lonely woman, but she's not as thrilled when the lady offers an invitation to her husband's ranch for the weekend. Amanda can't ride and has things to do with her kids. Lee talks her into it anyway after they discover that the wealthy oil baron who has been drilling in the prince's country isn't too happy about his wife suggesting that he drill elsewhere.
