Windy Angels

Got a quick start this morning with breakfast and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. "The Neighborhood Votes" on whether the playground should get a swing set or a slide. Daniel's upset when what he voted for isn't chosen, but his parents encourage him to find something good about the winner. Likewise, "The Class Votes" on whether their pet should be a bunny or a turtle. Daniel and Miss Elania are disappointed when they're voted down, but Teacher Harriet suggests finding something good about what did win.

No trouble at work whatsoever today. I helped a man out to his van and loaded it for him. Otherwise, I mainly swept and pushed carts. Despite it being the first day of the month, we weren't busy. People were either waiting for rush hour or the weekend. The weather was decent, too. Cold and blustery, but also sunny. It got a little cloudier later in the afternoon, but they were fat cottony clouds that were hardly threatening.

Went home, then went back out briefly to drop off a book I didn't want in the kiosk down the block. After I went upstairs, I had lunch while watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Professor Ludwig Von Drake's time machine accidentally regresses Goofy to a baby instead of making him a knight. The others take care of "Goofy Baby" while the Professor fixes his machine.

Took down the Halloween decorations after that, then put up what I have for Thanksgiving. I've acquired some great Thanksgiving decorations over the years, either from yard sales or after Dad passed away. The sweet bear pilgrim girl, two stuffed turkeys, and burlap turkey with long bead legs that sits upright belonged to Dad and used to decorate his house every year. Plymouth and Mayflower are the WebKinz turkeys I picked up a while ago. Found the tall folk art pilgrim couple, tiny pilgrim mouse, beautiful turkey candle, porcelain turkey salt and pepper shakers dressed as pilgrims, and the vintage cardboard pilgrim girl, Snoopy and Woodstock, and pilgrim children scenes at yard sales. Mom made the laminated "Happy Thanksgiving" turkey sign (with the turkey's feathers clearly traced around children's hands) when she worked for the Mitnick School in North Cape May.

Ran Happy Hunting while I worked. This 1956 vehicle for Ethel Merman has her as wealthy Philadelphia widow Liz who is incensed when she and her daughter Beth aren't invited to the wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier. She plots to find Beth an equally wealthy and titled suitor. Her initial choice is the Duke of Grenada (Fernando Lamas), but not only is he penniless, he's more interested in Liz and her money. Beth prefers Liz's lawyer Sandy.

Yeah, I can understand why this did all right in 1956 but was hardly a runaway hit. Merman and Lamas spent the rehearsal period feuding; this is reflected in their distinct lack of chemistry on the cast album. You have no idea why these two would be in love, other than the script says so. Merman was right that the songs are no great shakes, either. They hit all the cliche beats from this era - brassy patter numbers and bluesy ballads for Merman, operatic solos for Lamas, nonsensical chorus numbers that have nothing to do with anything for the daughter and lawyer. The only song that's even remotely decent is the adorable "Mutual Admiration Society" for Liz and Beth.

Honestly, most casual musical lovers can pass on this one without question. Recommended only for huge fans of Merman or the musicals of the 1950's.

Took a much-needed nap after I finished. I've been up way too late for the past few nights. Coupled with my early morning, I was about ready to drop. I woke up an hour and a half later and didn't want to get out of bed, it was so cozy and warm!

Worked on writing for a little while. Stephen taunts the hunchback, calling him "Ugly" and claiming he's a half-wit. Cora thinks he's sweet. She wants to see more of him, but Stephan drags her off to meet his court.

Broke for dinner and Match Game '79 at 7 PM. David Doyle, Scoey Mitchilll, and Loretta Swit joined in to see Fannie Flagg give the only odd answer to a question about what a dog who thinks he's human does. Charles is more nervous about helping with "Pinch of __" in the Head-to-Head in the next episode.

Ended the night online with mystery shows and cartoons. Charlie's Angels are hired to find out who killed a drifter working for a health resort. Kris and Kelly come on as teachers at the resort, while Sabrina checks in as a guest. Sabrina's an "Angel In Love" when falls for a handsome former skier (Peter Haskell), but her romance sours when it turns out he may not only know something about the murder, but was mixed up in a two-million-dollar plane hijacking.

Mystery Inc have their own weird encounters at a strange resort in "The Ghastly Ghost Town," the first episode of The New Scooby Doo Movies. After a giant mechanical bat runs them off the road, the kids seek help at what they think is a ghost town. It's really an amusement park run by the Three Stooges. Someone  has been trying to run them out and get them shut down. When Velma disappears and a mechanical dinosaur runs amok, it's up to the remaining kids to figure out who wants the land and the mines around it.
