It was so late by the time I got moving, I called Uber. Unfortunately, they took almost 10 minutes to arrive...which meant I was late to work. And there's work being done on Nicholson Road (again), which meant the driver had to go around. That's probably why the driver going home ended up turning around and cutting through Oaklyn instead of taking Nicholson. The one going home took 7 minutes. At least there was no traffic either way.
Maybe it's just as well that I did take Uber to work. It was hot, sunny, and murderously humid. Which may also be why we were dead most of the morning. I did get called to put some cold items away, but otherwise, I had far fewer problems today than I have for the past week. Grabbed two pretzel roll turkey sliders and a two for four bottles of Cherry Coke Zero and Orange Cream Coke Zero after work for lunch.
Ate at home while watching two of the Peanuts specials I picked up a few weeks ago. What a Nightmare, Charlie Brown has Chuck scolding Snoopy for being too domesticated after he won't pull his sled. Snoopy ends up dreaming that he's the least-likely dog to pull a sled in Alaska. (And this may be the strangest Peanuts special I've ever seen. There's some interesting gags, and it's certainly fascinating to see how Snoopy eventually "goes wild," but other than the opening, it doesn't seem to have much to do with Peanuts or even really Snoopy.)
You're the Greatest, Charlie Brown has Chuck joining the decathlon, where his competition includes Marcie, Freddie Fabulous, and The Masked Marvel (Snoopy). Chuck actually manages to hold his own, and Marcie doesn't do badly, either. He thinks he might actually win...but even when he takes a wrong turn in the last event, he's still a winner in the eyes of Marcie and his friends.
Headed back out on foot after that. I thought I was late to the school...but so were the kids. They were just arriving from their field trip to a huge playground in Philadelphia when I joined them. Needless to say, after running around in the heat, they were all really rowdy. They were scolded for being noisy during their snack time, and spent their free play running around. I tried to explain to a couple of girls at the drawing table that their pretending to give each other jobs was less pretending and more ordering each other around, but I don't think I got through to them.
I considered getting an iced tea latte on the way home, but by the time we got out, it was cloudy, windy, and much cooler. I could smell rain in the air. Just ended up hurrying home instead, dodging traffic on the White Horse Pike.
Worked on Hilary and the Beasts when I got in. Hilary gets Troll (Jeff) into bed so she can ask him the truth. Why does he have records featuring the voices of her ex-husband and his secretary Victor Comstock? How did he meet Pavla in the first place? How does he own the house? Troll manages to get out before his coughing fits nearly knock him off the bed that Pavla met him in Europe and wanted to use his theatrical connections to get into the US and get good acting roles...but her involvement with several groups that were of major concern to many Americans made her look suspicious to the government. He was a means to an end...and when he and his friends found out about those groups, she attacked them.
When Hilary finally rolls on top of Troll, he tries to ask her to marry him again. She doesn't have the chance to consider it when Mr. Rabbit (Mr. Foley) turns up with chicken soup and tea for them. Hilary ultimately decides to have her soup with the others in the kitchen, leaving Troll fuming as Mr. Rabbit fusses over him.
Listened to 2000 Years with Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks while I worked. The title sketch, with Reiner interviewing very, very old Brooks, remains classic to this day. Most of the other sketches, including one on Beatnik types found in a coffee house in the early-mid 60's, have dated far less well. Brooks' ability to mimic a wide variety of voices is far more impressive than most of the actual content, which is very much tied into the reality of the early 60's.
(Oh, and it did finally start raining somewhere around here. It was a pretty noisy storm, with lightning, thunder, and a huge downpour, but it passed quickly and seems to be long gone now.)
Switched to Match Game Syndicated during dinner. Bubbly Betty Kennedy and deadpan Bob Donner joined in for the first week. In the last episode, poor Joyce Bulifant starts rambling about one of her answers...and she goes on for so long that everyone eventually walks off-stage. Susan Richardson does comfort her, but she ends up very upset, with her thumb in her mouth.
Watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse next. "Little Red Riding Minnie" wants to bring her famous minestrone soup to Goofy, who has a cold. Mickey and the others help her stay on the path, while Big Bad Pete chases them to get a sip of that wonderful-smelling soup!
Finished the night listening to the original Broadway cast album for The Scarlet Pimpernel in honor of yet another WENN fanfiction idea I came up with. In the early 4th season, Victor Comstock reads the book to get programming ideas...and passes out and dreams he's the seemingly cold, detached nobleman who is really the passionate rescuer the Scarlet Pimpernel, Maple is his suspicious actress wife (Carollee Caramello did actually play the role on Broadway), Jeff, Scott, Mr. Foley, and C.J are his men, Mackie, Gertie, and Mr. Eldridge are servants in his household, Hilary is a noblewoman and Maple's fellow actress, and Betty is Maple's best friend who is in love with Scott. I'm really, really backlogged on ideas, so no clue when this will turn up - possibly spring, depending on how the fairy tale stories go.
