Not So Dumb

Began the morning with breakfast and the 1966 Prince Street Players version of Jack and the Beanstalk. I go further into this unique made-for-TV family special at my Musical Dreams Movie Reviews blog.

Headed off to work after Jack ended. Work remains a bit of a pain in the rear. I was the only one there - the head bagger was cashiering today - which meant I had to put cold items away and clean up a mess in the men's bathroom along with sweeping and pushing carts. I kept falling behind on the carts. Things went better later in the day, when it quieted down a bit and people went home for their barbecues and family gatherings or down to the Shore.

Soon as I got home, I jumped straight in the shower. After I got out and had shrimp and salad for dinner, I put on today's Match Game marathon. Ugly Edna and Dumb Donald were two more of the "characters" used in questions during the later episodes. Dumb Donald was the male counterpart of Dumb Dora...which occasionally upset Patti Deusch. Her husband's name is Donald, and he could get pretty strange. Ugly Edna's questions basically revolved around how men reacted to her less-than-stellar looks.

Even in the 70's and early 80's, Edna's questions came in for frequent criticism by panelists, who found her insulting and distasteful. By the time of the syndicated run, the character was now named Ugly Ulfrea, as real-life Ednas had begun to protest. Both Dumb Donald and Ugly Edna/Ulfrea questions were used as late as The Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour. One turned up on that insane episode where all of the panelists had to hold their arms in Xs and Os because the board broke. (Jay Leno in particular heavily protested this and threatened to call his lawyer.)

You won't be dumb if you join in on this hilarious marathon celebrating two of the most popular Match Game characters!
