A Pair of Matches

Began the morning with breakfast and The Busy World of Richard Scarry. Huckle wants to be the "Inventor of the Year" when Miss Honey reads about inventions. He keeps coming up with elaborate machines that fall apart. He's ready to give up, but he finally learns that the simplest methods are the best when he points out a better way for Mr. Fixit to connect the pipes in their classroom, then a use for the extra pipes. "Macaroni Polo" is the brother of Marco Polo who creates a new type of food for the Emperor of China after he accidentally breaks his vase. "Lone Wolf at the Lighthouse" may seem like a lonely soul, but he loves his job enough to save Huckle and Lowly from a foggy day on the water.

Hurried off to work after the cartoon ended. Just got there in time. We were honestly pretty busy for most of the day. The weather was gorgeous, the nicest it's been all summer. It was sunny, warm but not hot, and the lingering humidity disappeared as the day went on. Many people may have been holding backyard barbecues or heading off to the Shore. I had a lot of cold returns to do and more carts to push. Other than the cold returns putting me behind a little on carts, there were no major problems. Finally remembered to pick up my blood pressure medication on the way out.

Treated myself to a much-needed stop at Common Grounds Coffee House on the way home. Tried their blueberry lemonade and pineapple-coconut muffin. The muffin was amazing, moist and sweet and very pineapple. The lemonade didn't really taste much like blueberries, and it was very sweet, but it was good and refreshing.

Changed and got organized while watching The Monkees after I got home. Davy Jones is recruited by a shady promoter as the next great boxing champion. His older friends, especially Mike Nesmith, smell trouble and do some poking around. When they discover that Davy's fights were fixed, "The Monkees In the Ring" do their best to first scare off the current champ (a parody of Muhammad Ali), then help Davy out with the match.

Went into the inventory after the Monkees ended. Added the soundtracks from Forrest Gump and the first film version of Charlie's Angels, the movie version of Funny Girl, and the two Frozen films. Forrest Gump goes so far back, I bought it at Stockton College somewhere around 1999-2000 when there was a CD seller on campus.

Watched Mother Goose Rock n' Rhyme as I worked. I go further into this bizarre 1990 fantasy in honor of the late Shelly Duvall at my Musical Dreams Movie Reviews blog.

Finished the night at YouTube with today's Match Game marathon honoring another female performer who passed away recently. Comedienne Mitzi McCall, who died yesterday, was best-known for the nightclub act she had with her husband of 64 years Charlie Brill. Though they didn't appear on Match Game together, they each did memorable weeks separately.

Mitzi had trouble in her first week in 1974 with Elaine Joyce, who did not want to sit in the sixth comedienne seat. She kind of had a point. She and Mitzi did play a bit better once they switched seats. Don Adams was even more obnoxious, demanding Richard's seat and special treatment. Charles' seat was the closest he got. Gene inadvertently taught Elaine a lesson about fussing over seating when he pulls the strings on her halter top after she answers him on a question and nearly takes her dress off! She's not too happy when he and Richard try to help her fix it, either. Earlier in the week, Elaine and Mitzi show off variations on a floral halter top and tie front blouse.

Mitzi was also around for Richard Deacon's debut later in 1974 and Patty Duke's in 1975. Gunilla Hudson joined in for Deacon's week, showing off jeans with writing on the rear thirty years before that became popular in the 2000's. Nipsey Russell took over for Charles that week. Gary Burghoff sat in for him during the week with Patty.

Charlie and Mitzi did make appearances together on Tattletales and Beat the Clock. Ironically, they played Elaine and her then-husband Bobby Van on the 1979 version of the latter, sadly just months before Bobby died of a brain tumor. The Brills were at their funniest on Tattletales. Even when Patty and her husband John Austin beat the pants off them, they still had some of the best stories of the night, including what happened when Mitzi accidentally brought her bra out during one of their comedy acts.

Honor this hilarious lady with these classic episodes!
