Caught In the Storms

Got a quick start this morning with breakfast and Charlie and Lola. Lola claims "Thunder Does Not Completely Scare Me," even as she holds pillows over her ears. She's convinced there's an angry giant stomping around. Charlie finally shows her that thunder really isn't anything to be afraid of.

There were dark clouds gathering on the horizon and it remains killer hot and humid, so I thought I'd be safer taking Uber. No trouble here! The Uber driver arrived in 6 minutes this morning and 5 going home. The driver had to dodge that road work on Nicholson and barely got me to work on time, but the one going home had enough sense to cut through Oaklyn.

Work didn't start out too badly. We were steady, but not overwhelmingly busy like the weekend. Either everyone did their shopping then, ran down to the Shore before the weather got ugly, or were trying to avoid said weather. I did get called to put away a cart of cold returns that put me behind in doing carts and sweeping. Other than that, no real problems.

Went straight home after work. Changed when I got in while watching the series finale of Laff-a-Lympics. We kick off with a sampan (boat) race in old "Siam." Hokey Wolf and Cindy Bear get floated into first by Mrs. Creeply's attempt to stir up trouble. Captain Caveman manages to do well in the 3-way soccer game despite eating the giant soft soccer ball. The last competitions involve a rocket to the "Moon." Everyone wins the rocket race, thanks to the Dread Baron's suction cups, while the Great Fondoo's magic works well enough for once to let him win the Moon Foot Race. The final tally ends with all three teams in first...and Mildew Wolf ready to go literally bananas from the lunacy around him.

And that's it. I really wish they'd continued this, or at least finished out the second season. For something intended as filler between cartoon episodes, this is frequently hilarious. While I'm still a Yogi woman, the Rottens are the most creative cheaters I've ever seen and definitely grew on me. If you're a fan of any of the characters involved or massive crossover episodes, you'll love seeing what these all-star loonies can do off the field and on.

Switched to Gimme Shelter while working on the inventory. I go further into this dark look at the Rolling Stones and their performance at the disastrous Altamont Free Music Festival at my Musical Dreams Movie Reviews blog.

Finally finished the vinyl soundtracks today. Titles added included The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the film versions of Victor/Victoria, Xanadu, and Young Frankenstein, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Wizard of Oz, Wish, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Woodstock, and a set with the MGM movies Words and Music and Good News. Had no idea where to put Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds rock opera; finally moved it back with the regular rock albums.

Broke at 6 PM to head out. I originally wanted to check out the National Night Out over on West Clinton...but when I went outside, it was raining, despite it still being sunny. I sat on the porch and waited until the rain slowed down, then headed down the street.

That was not a wise decision. The storm picked up again not two minutes after I left. I took shelter at a covered ramp that leads to the back door of the fire station not once, but twice. The rain was even worse the second time, coming down in buckets, with that thunder and lightning that frightened Lola this morning blasting in the background. Finally gave up going down West Clinton and went in the opposite direction back to the White Horse Pike after the racket finally ended.

Capitol Pizza was probably the better idea on a wild night. Phillies Phatties has the better pizza, but Capitol is closer. I ate a slice of cheese and a slice of mushroom and drank a bottle of Diet Pepsi while half-listening to Channel 10 news blather about politics and the current gold medal count for the US at the Paris Olympics. (I am glad to hear how well the ladies are doing, including the women's basketball and soccer teams, several female swimmers, and heavily decorated gymnast Simone Biles.)

Hurried home before the downpour returned and into Match Game Syndicated. Kirstie Alley was a contestant on Match Game almost a decade before she first appeared on Cheers. She did very well, too, winning both her rounds despite not being amused by either the questions or Gene Rayburn's flirting.

Finished the night working on my review while listening to a less troubled concert. Wings Over America is a collection from various North American tour dates heard in 1976. Along with major Wings hits like "Live and Let Die," "Jet," "Band On the Run," and "Maybe I'm Amazed," we get McCartney's Beatles songs like "The Long and Winding Road," "Lady Madonna," "Blackbird," "Yesterday," and "I've Just Seen a Face." I had no idea a DVD was released of this, too. Considering how dynamic some of the songs are, I might have to look for that

(Oh, and the storm is far from over. The downpours have continued off and on, sometimes heavily, for the rest of the night.)
